The Los Angeles-Guangzhou Sister City Association was among the organizers for the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month event on May 27, 2023, in our Sister City of Guangzhou. The event was attended by over 300 guests including the U.S. Consul General and the Foreign Affairs Office Director of Guangzhou.

The spotlight for the event was the recognition of Paula Williams Madison, a well-known executive in US media and business. Paula has been presented with numerous awards and recognition as executive vice president of NBC Universal, a company officer of GE, owner of the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks basketball team, and principal owner of the Africa Channel, a Black-owned media company.

Paula was named one of the “75 Most Powerful African Americans in Corporate America” by Black Enterprise Magazine in 2005 and included in the Hollywood Reporter’s “Power 100", she's been honored by Asian organizations as well, having been recognized in 2014 as one of the Outstanding 50 Asian Americans in Business, by the East West Players and AARP with their Visionary Award and the Los Angeles Chinese American Museum with its 2015 Chinese American Heritage and Legacy Award.

This gift was presented to the city of Guangzhou by our Association around the 2023 Spring Festival. Accepting the gift on behalf of the city were our old and dear friends from the Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office. The gift was designed by Elaine Yolam Kwong with the assistance of LAGSCA directors Frank Zagar and K.K. Kwong. We owe our great thanks to the Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Co., Ltd.

LAGSCA Directors, Members, and Friends:

A warm welcome to you all as we usher in the Year of the Rabbit.

The Association celebrated the New Year of the Rabbit with a lively get-together on February 17th, 2023.

Mr. Shi Yuanqiang, Vice Consul General, and his colleagues Mr. Han Jiangtao, and Ms. Yan Lingzhi also joined us from Chinese Consulate.

Our dedicated Co-President, Jeffrey Cheung, passed the baton to Fred Hong who plans on spending more time in Los Angeles.

Marsha Hobbs, our long serving Chairman, will now be Chairman Emeritus but continues on as an active supporter. Succeeding her will be Katherine Whitman who has previously served as Vice Chairman. Marcia’s contributions to the LA-Guangzhou Sister City Association going back to the founding, have been too numerous to name.

What is coming up for the Association? We are developing a number of new initiatives. Already underway, in the planning stages, is an exchange of art between children in Guangzhou and Los Angeles. You will be hearing more details soon.

We are also in contact with our partners at the Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office in the planning for our 40th anniversary gift to the city.

Our gift was designed by Elaine Yolam Kwong and produced in China by the Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Co., Ltd. with the gracious assistance of our member and Secretary, Frank Zagar.

Plans are in the works for a visit to Guangzhou to celebrate our continuing People to People relationship with Guangzhou and to see the gift in place.

We’ll keep you apprised of anything new regarding these and other upcoming events.
