The Los Angeles-Guangzhou Sister City Association held a very successful and exhilarating reception at LAX on Monday evening, July 24. The purpose was to welcome and congratulate the China National Jump Rope Team Guangzhou Huadu Team on their tremendous success in winning 14 gold, 12 silver, and 4 bronze medals at the International Jump Rope Championship Competitions in Colorado Springs, Colorado, during 7/16-23, 2023 competition. Joining us at the reception were two consuls from the PRC Consulate in Los Angeles, and representatives from the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles and the Southern California Cantonese Association.

We are glad that our Board members/ officers Fred Hong with his wife and son, K.K. Kwong, Frank Zagar with his wife Rosemary, and Robert Donin were at the reception.

The Huadu Guangzhou team of 9 young jump rope contestants and 3 coaches were all very moved by our warm welcome during their short layover in Los Angeles. The Huadu team won eight gold medals when they participated in the two previous world champion jump rope games in Dubai and Norway. They broke the world record and maintained another world record in the competition this year in Colorado.

The Los Angeles-Guangzhou Sister City Association was among the organizers for the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month event on May 27, 2023, in our Sister City of Guangzhou. The event was attended by over 300 guests including the U.S. Consul General and the Foreign Affairs Office Director of Guangzhou.

The spotlight for the event was the recognition of Paula Williams Madison, a well-known executive in US media and business. Paula has been presented with numerous awards and recognition as executive vice president of NBC Universal, a company officer of GE, owner of the WNBA Los Angeles Sparks basketball team, and principal owner of the Africa Channel, a Black-owned media company.

This gift was presented to the city of Guangzhou by our Association around the 2023 Spring Festival. Accepting the gift on behalf of the city were our old and dear friends from the Guangzhou Foreign Affairs Office. The gift was designed by Elaine Yolam Kwong with the assistance of LAGSCA directors Frank Zagar and K.K. Kwong. We owe our great thanks to the Shanghai Yaohua Pilkington Glass Co., Ltd.
